Cobb, who originated the role, will remain the definitive Willy Loman. Of course there are those for whom Lee J. Some 36 years after its premiere, it still moves us profoundly, even to tears, with its story of an impossible little man to whom attention must be paid. There can be no lingering doubts about ''Death of a Salesman'' being an American classic. It has now, under the direction of Volker Schlondorff, been adapted for television and the result - with commercial breaks arranged intelligently -is as powerful and magnificent a performance of the play as is likely to be seen in this generation. This revival of the Arthur Miller play, starring Dustin Hoffman as Willy Loman, was deservedly acclaimed on Broadway last year. SUNDAY night's presentation of ''Death of a Salesman,'' from 8 to 11, is being described by CBS as an ''event.'' It is one of those rare and welcome occasions when commercial television is not exaggerating.
